There is only one item on the JAG’s agenda for Wednesday August 14 – the Adaptive Management Experiment THP (AMEX) – but that item raises several issues with Cal Fire’s management of JDSF.

Tell the JAG to protect JDSF in the following ways:

  • Demand that all timber harvest plans are put on hold until a new Forest Management Plan is in place. The old Forest Management Plan is out of date and does not reflect today’s values of the people of California. It is inappropriate to approve THPs under this outdated plan. The JAG is attempting to approve the AMEX THP that will be discussed at Wednesday’s meeting under both the “new vision” and the old management plan, yet the THP documents fail to reference the new vision at all.
  • Demand that the forest management plan is done with an EIR under CEQA. The forest management plan should be reviewed under CEQA in order to allow full public participation and ensure tribal consultation requirements are legally enforceable. Cal Fire is attempting to take a shortcut that will result in a weaker management plan.
  • Demand equal decision-making tribal co-management. The AMEX THP purportedly incorporates priorities identified by tribes, but tribal participation in the project is not mentioned or formally recognized. Given the project seeks to address climate change, including through the use of prescribed fire – tribes must be included in the early stage development of this project. One of the best ways to do this is through an intertribal co-management model for JDSF that allows tribes to share decision-making authority with Cal Fire.
  • ALSO Request an Update on Operations at the Soda Gulch THP. It is unclear what operations are occuring at Soda Gulch. The logging operations were supposed to be posted until 2025 and there have been no further updates on whether the Coalition’s concerns over this THP are being addressed.
